BioImpedance Analysis Helps Calculate Body Fat

Bioimpedance Analysis

Distinguishing between body fat and body weight can be a difficult task to handle on your own. Often times when people view their own weight on the scale they believe their weight has a correlation to the amount of fat they have. The weight you see on the scale is not synonymous with the amount of body fat in your body. This is where a BioImpedance Analysis comes in.

It might be helpful if we explain the difference between body fat in comparison to body weight. Body weight is going to be the weight of everything inside your body added together- your heart and organs, your spine and bones, your muscles, everything. Body fat is only a percentage of all of that weighed amount. With BioImpedance Analysis our Orr Chiropractic staff can give you an estimate on your amount of body fat.

What Does BioImpedance Mean?

BioImpedance is the body’s resistance to allow an electrical current to flow through the body tissues. The muscle in your body holds water, which readily allows a current to pass through it. Body fat, however, resists the current that is being send through the body. Therefore, if a person had more fat in their body the bioimpedance will be higher.

The actual exam consists of having the patient lie down and having electrodes placed on his hand and foot. These electrodes transmit a current and measure the body’s resistance. In addition, statistical information such as weight, height, age, physical activity, etc. is imputed into the machine to get a more accurate calculation of body fat. The current is so small that it is painless and only takes a few minutes for the procedure.

Orr Chiropractic’s View on BioImpedance

At Orr Chiropractic of Central Ohio we use the results from a BioImpedance Analysis in a few ways. By determining the amount of body fat in your body we are able to identify how we should structure our nutritional counseling recommendations. In addition, this also gives us insight into what suggestions we should make for your fitness plan and any ways chiropractic adjustments would also be beneficial. Ultimately, we want this test to give you more information so we can improve your overall health.

With this analysis there can be fluctuations in results, for example following strenuous exercise or being dehydrated can slightly alter the results of this exam. Despite this discrepancy, the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis is one of the most effective ways to determine body fat. Because of the factors that can reduce accuracy of this reading, our Central Ohio chiropractic team encourages our clients to use the BioImpedance Analysis during multiple visits to observe the progress of their body fat loss.
